Ring Ring!
So Friday I went by the Rosedale Mall to see what the iPhone line was like at the Apple store. Turns out the reports of the massive line were true so I got a picture or two then headed to lunch with coworkers.

On the way they forced me to stop at an AT&T store. There was a two minute line for orders so I put one in. In an effort to spend the most money possible, I went with the 16gb plus expedited shipping. To be different I specified white (YT) sight unseen. *snicker* Looking at some of the pictures online I think the black might have been more sleek. Oh well. I was happy to have it en route so I could stop thinking about it.
Did order a full body shield from the same people that made the one I have for my Touch. Looks like there are other flash accessories that I'm not going to bother with. Want to get it in my hands before I start throwing good money after bad. *snicker*
The sales chick wouldn't give me any time estimates when I was ordering since everything was such a mess. Figured I could check online when things calmed down. Yet when I went to AT&T confirmation site they didn't recognize me by phone number or order confirmation. Decided to call them directly for my FedEx number. Looks like it will arrive this afternoon!

What Fits Together
Had a good night last night. Andrew and I hit some happy hours downtown then walked over to the Block E. We caught Hancock which I really enjoyed until the end. After that was over Andrew looked at me slyly and said, “Should we go see Wanted?” So we walked over to that area with *gasp* paying for it! I felt like such a delinquent. Yet I was relieved because it was totally sucking. We looked at each other then got up to head into Hulk instead. *snicker* Ended up seeing it through; it was enjoyable but not that great. What I loved most is all the lead-in to S.H.I.E.L.D. Doom is already established so I wonder if they have anyone in mind for Nick Fury.
WoW friend texted me while I was drinking, wondering if I would be willing to go Shadow to raid. It actually made me smile. I loved Shadow but haven't done it in BC at all. I leveled Holy with friends then went Disc for PvP when Kara broke up the guild. With all the Kara runs I've done, I did pick up DPS pieces. Logged in this morning to see what I lack and was surprised to see how many things I had ferreted away—even Ruby Slippers! After a quick review, it looks like I need trinkets, pants, gloves, and hat. Might be able to get up to speed pretty quickly.
Was going to hit the downtown AT&T store this morning for a G3 but changed my mind. I've heard some insane reports about lines and bullshit. I can wait a few weeks for the hype to settle down. Yet getting in to work, everyone was on my ass. Even my boss was saying, “Now might be a good time to go since the initial rush will have died down and the lunch rush wouldn't have begun.” So I might head up there in a few minutes. *sigh*

Weak Legged Fox
While I was noticing and liking differences in the new Firefox, I'm back to 2.0.0.14 for a while. Using the Portable Apps distribution allows me to safely have both. Too many crashes though. It's probably the add-ons, but I cannot live without Adblock Plus. Patience.

Recognition via Mp3 Player
Had a entertaining lunch with the COO and the CIO today. Was sorta funny to have us trench workers mixing all the way up to the top of the corporate structure. I mostly behaved myself until the end when they asked for random questions. Mine was, “Have you located talent in India to replace us yet?”
At the end of our discussion they gave each of us an 8gb iPod Touch. It was surprisingly generous and in my estimation, not deserved. Instead of giving it back I went to Best Buy and traded up to the 32gb version for an additional $200. *snicker* Between the Shuffle and the 160gb Classic, I really don't need it. In fact I was seriously tempted by one team mate's suggestion to traded it in towards a PS3. Yet that seemed disrespectful. It will be a fun memento of the last few months of drudgery.
This will be the third Apple product under my roof. *shudder* Can't be a good sign.

A Lot Lighter
Back in teh day before torrents and P2P networks there was Usenet alt.binaries. I scoured them pretty regularly for music (never pr0n or warez) then burned off my findings to CD since hard disk space was a premium. My collection grew to almost two hundred discs before I finally bought a DVD burner.
Brought my fattest disc organizer in to work a few weeks ago. At various points in the day I would toss in a CD and copy it over to my USB drive. Got the last one done today. Totally a nerd moment, but it felt so cool to see all those discs turned into trash and all of their contents now immediately accessible. Still have more than 4gb free, too. Now I have to do the tag and cover updates so I can get more stuff on the iPod.

Technological Reduction Transfered more than one hundred of my old archive CDs onto my little Western Digital USB drive. I so love technology.

Kindle... Next Generation?
Got spam from three different sources yesterday when Amazon unveiled their Kindle reader. Even Adam sent me a note this morning, likening it to a PADD. I did check out the hoopla. In fact, by yesterday afternoon there were already 150+ comments from beta testers to general cynics.
I really like the idea. At the very least, it's a free Wiki browser thats has service anywhere you can use a cell phone. It doesn't try to do a lot of PDA bullshit, either. Really focused on what it's supposed to do. Color would be nice but that would also detract from the intent. Super long batter life on a highly readable screen. It does have an SD port for (much needed) additional space and you can connect it to the computer via USB so you don't have to pay to eMail things to it. Though it can't read PDF, you can convert PDFs to Mobi, which it will read.
The biggest reason I won't be buying one is the DRM. I absolutely hate not “owning” what I buy. A virus, software crash or hardware upgrade can destroy all of my purchases; I find that risk unacceptable. The only reason I have iTunes installed is because the stupid iPod requires it. I never go to the iStore except for album covers. Yet I know how to strip the Apple DRM off my songs. I'd have to find a way to remove it from the books I buy before I would ever consider this thing.
The next biggest reason is the price. It seems like a pretty extreme investment to be tied to a proprietary service. Granted, Amazon has some serious presence and will likely be around another decade. But that doesn't warrant a $400 price tag. If they pull an Apple and drop it to $200, I might be tempted.
For now, I'm still happy reading PDFs on the PDA. Definitely not as nice as what the Kindle ties together, but I'm stubborn and relatively content for now.

Skin Deep
Very few people can scoop me when it comes to Star Trek news, but Adam has a few times. Being adorable makes it hard to resent him for it. Anyway. I like the fact that I have no idea who Chris Pine is, the guy just casted for Kirk. Hell, I only know two of the primary actors. Will be fresh, new, and all that. My biggest concern so far is that all the cast is hot. Really hot. Eric Bana, Karl Urban, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Zoe Saldana. Even that Anton Yelchin kid is cute. Stupid Hollywood.

Money Well Spent?
Colby would be smirking at me right now, but thankfully he's a few times zones away.
It really is too expensive but I love ignoring cost when I want something. What started me iThinking was seeing RJ's alluring collection completely contained and how smooth the car-to-home transition is. My music tastes are finally maturing so there's a reason for all the space.1 Not sure what pushed me over though. Being able to do the pictures and movies I suppose—nerd novelty.
The final barrier was my distaste for iTunes. The interface is too Mac plus I'm naturally adverse to anything that conceals data and enforces order. Yet I've been able to work with it in the past, even removing DRM with Colby's help.2 It will do the album covers and lyrics, which are my minimal requirements so I'll acclimate.
Took six years to overcome my iPrejudice. Wonder if I'll ever get an iMac? Sure hope not.
Current iCount: 172 songs, 0 Videos, 0 Podcasts, 0 Pictures, 0 Contacts. (147gb free)

- All of my music prior to 2000 ripped to just over 12gb. In the last seven years that has more than tripled.
- Hopefully that process has gotten smoother.

Plans Awry
On the way into work I pulled up behind a green Acura at a stop light. Had a nice bike racked and the guy looked pretty hot from his side-view mirror. Until he start digging vigorously in his left nostril. Was giggling to myself as he released whatever he found out the window; liked his watch.
UPS tracking confirms that roughly $1000 of computer hardware has been delivered. The concierge might be dropping boxes off in my apartment right this minute. In my prime I was building three computers an hour but this one will probably take all evening. That's okay. It's rainy outside anyway. Plus there's laundry and I'm only half-way through Season One of TNG.

Must Have
Just watched a video demo of a multi-touchscreen that totally got my attention. It reminded me of some silly movie that allowed a VR user to select books and files from a pretend archive. It had a mock angel that would flutter down that you could ask questions.
But this damn thing is real. I saw him browse a Wiki and play a Star Trek TNG video. It was like a huge virtual canvas that you could pan around and throw images around. My brain would totally love to work that way. Just wouldn't want to stand… need the drafting-table version so I can sit my lazy ass down in front of it.
